The World Customs Organisation (WCO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have launched a five-day workshop aimed at enhancing the knowledge of Customs officers in Africa on rules of origin.
The program focuses on improving trade facilitation and regulatory compliance across the continent.
Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, Caroline Niagwan, emphasized the importance of the training in fostering intra-African trade and regional economic integration. She described the initiative as a key step towards enhancing the continent’s trade capacity.
According to Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada, the workshop is part of the ongoing technical assistance provided by WCO and JICA to support African Customs administrations in their efforts to boost trade efficiency.
Faith Mathenge, a Rules of Origin expert, highlighted the training’s role in unlocking new trade opportunities. She also praised Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for his strong focus on capacity building to advance the sector.
The workshop includes practical sessions to familiarize participants with the certification process, essential for the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocols, promoting smoother trade within the region.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Africa’s trade systems, with international partnerships playing a crucial role in promoting sustainable economic growth.
