Speaking at his first press conference since assuming office, Ambassador Mignot highlighted the significant role Nigeria plays in the EU’s economic strategy, with total trade between the two regions reaching €35 billion in 2023.
“Nigeria remains the EU’s largest trading partner in Africa, accounting for 28% of our total trade. With a €10.7 billion trade surplus in Nigeria’s favour and €26.4 billion in foreign direct investment stock, we are committed to supporting Nigeria’s economic growth under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Mignot stated.
The Ambassador emphasized the EU’s commitment to sustainable development in Nigeria, citing initiatives under the Global Gateway program, which focuses on green energy, digital economy, agriculture, and industrialization.
Notable projects under this initiative include; the Lagos waterway transport, renewable energy projects, and vaccine production.
Mignot, who succeeded Samuela Isopi in September, outlined his mission to strengthen the EU-Nigeria partnership, particularly in tackling challenges in northern Nigeria, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting peace and security.
He also praised Nigeria’s vibrant cultural contributions and strategic position in Africa, calling the country a “key partner.”
The Ambassador urged the press to collaborate with the EU in combating misinformation and raising awareness about the shared successes between the two regions.
