The Nigeria Police Force has appointed Livingston Ikioye Urutuku as the new Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, replacing Nnaghe Obono Itam, who exits the role after nine months in office.
Itam’s tenure was marked by escalating security challenges, including a surge in kidnappings, cult clashes, and violent crimes. Although no official reason was given for his removal, concerns over rising insecurity in the state may have influenced the decision.
His departure comes shortly after the launch of the Agunechemba Security Squad, a special unit deployed to combat criminal activities in Anambra. Civil society groups, including human rights activist Comrade Osita Obi, had previously criticized the handling of security under his watch, calling for urgent intervention.
The Police Service Commission, in announcing the leadership change, emphasized the need for swift and decisive action. Commission Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), tasked CP Urutuku with strengthening law enforcement efforts and restoring public confidence in the state’s security framework.
