The former Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, contesting the legitimacy of his removal.
Obasa filed a suit before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his impeachment was unlawful as it took place while the Assembly was in recess. The embattled lawmaker is seeking a court ruling to overturn his removal and reaffirm his position.
As part of his legal challenge, Obasa has requested an accelerated hearing and urged the court to limit the response period for the defendants to seven days after the hearing. He insists that his removal violated established legislative procedures and applicable laws governing the Assembly’s leadership.
The former Speaker also questioned the legality of the current leadership, emphasizing that due process was not followed.
Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House. However, no date has been set for the court hearing on the matter.
