The political landscape in Lagos State continues to face turbulence following the withdrawal of police security attached to the Lagos State House of Assembly and its current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
The development has further escalated tensions within the legislative body.
Reports indicate that the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, allegedly forced his way into Meranda’s office on Thursday, accompanied by armed individuals.
The incident occurred shortly after security operatives assigned to the Assembly and the Speaker were withdrawn, raising concerns about potential power struggles within the legislative institution.
Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers in the Assembly, who cited gross misconduct and abuse of office as reasons for his impeachment. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, his former deputy, was elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, with Mojeed Fatai appointed as her deputy.
Despite his ouster, Obasa has refused to accept the decision, arguing that the impeachment process was flawed and did not follow due process. In response, he has taken legal action against the Assembly, challenging the legitimacy of his removal.
With the case now before the court, the political uncertainty surrounding the Lagos State House of Assembly remains unresolved, as both factions seek legal validation for their claims. Observers are closely watching how the judicial process will unfold and its potential impact on governance in the state.
