Sokoto State has recorded an outbreak of meningitis, prompting an urgent response from health officials to contain the disease and prevent further spread.
Confirming the development, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aliyu Balarabe, stated that medical teams have been deployed to affected areas to provide treatment and conduct surveillance. “We are working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other health partners to ensure swift intervention,” he said.
Meningitis, a life-threatening infection that affects the brain and spinal cord, is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in overcrowded and poorly ventilated environments. Health experts warn that early detection and treatment are critical to reducing fatalities.
The NCDC has also issued an advisory, urging residents to report symptoms such as high fever, neck stiffness, headaches, nausea, and confusion. “Timely medical intervention can save lives. We encourage people to seek immediate care if they notice any signs of meningitis,” an NCDC spokesperson said.
In response to the outbreak, the Sokoto State government has intensified public health awareness campaigns and vaccination efforts to protect vulnerable populations. Dr. Balarabe reassured residents that adequate medical supplies, including antibiotics and vaccines, are being provided to health centres across the state.
Sokoto, located within Africa’s meningitis belt, remains vulnerable to seasonal outbreaks, particularly during the dry season. Health authorities continue to emphasise the importance of preventive measures, including maintaining proper hygiene and ensuring children receive routine immunisations.
