The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has selected four Nigerian states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for the second phase of its education project, a collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The project’s first phase, launched in 2021, covered six states and will conclude this year. During an assessment visit to UBEC Model Smart School in Lafia, Nasarawa State, KOICA Country Director Kim Eunsuil expressed satisfaction with the school’s facilities and the dedication of its teachers.
Kim explained that the assessment aimed to evaluate the project’s impact, noting challenges such as electricity shortages, poor internet access, lack of potable water, and the absence of a school bus, which hinder effective teaching and learning.
Jaafar Musa, principal of the UBEC Smart School Lafia, highlighted the school’s academic achievements and state-of-the-art facilities as key reasons for its selection in the second phase. The school has also earned national recognition and will represent Nigeria in an international competition in China this year.
The KOICA education project, a bilateral initiative between Nigeria and South Korea, focuses on enhancing science, technology, technical, and vocational education at the elementary school level.
