Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Spikers have exited the 2025 Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship following defeats in the Round of 16, as the tournament continued at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
NCS fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) to Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) on Tuesday despite strong home support. The hosts started brightly but were soon overwhelmed by KCB’s dominant service game and relentless pressure.
In the opening set, NCS attempted a fightback with powerful spikes and serves but couldn’t close the gap, as KCB sealed it 25-19. The Kenyans continued their dominance in the second set, racing to an 11-4 lead before NCS called a timeout. Despite the break, KCB maintained control and won the set 25-17.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with NCS trailing early and KCB staying composed to close out the match 25-17, confirming their place in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, CNS Spikers lost 1-3 (22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 17-25) to Litto Volleyball Club of Cameroon, also bowing out of the competition. Despite taking a set, the Naval side couldn’t sustain the momentum against a resilient Cameroonian team.
Both Nigerian teams will now compete in classification matches to determine their final placement in the tournament.
Meanwhile, tournament favorites Al Ahly of Egypt made a bold statement in their title defense, defeating Descartes of Côte d’Ivoire in straight sets, 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-15).
Carthage of Tunisia, two-time champions, also advanced to the quarterfinals with a commanding 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-20) win over Sococim of Senegal.
Al Ahly’s domestic rivals, Zamalek SC, cruised past Mayo-Kane Evolution (MKE) of Cameroon with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) victory.
Armee Patriotique Rwanda (APR) progressed to the next round after a 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 25-17) win over La Loi of DR Congo, rounding off an exciting day of volleyball in Abuja.
