Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) has been ordered to pay a total fine of N5 million following a security breach that led to an attack on the Ikorodu City contingent after their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 32 clash at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
The club is to pay N3 million for the incident and an additional N2 million to Ikorodu City for damages to their bus.
In a statement, the disciplinary panel confirmed that the Ibadan-based club was found guilty on three counts: “failure to provide adequate security, failure to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, and throwing of objects onto the field, including at the referees.”
The panel emphasized the severity of the breaches, stating, “The actions of Shooting Stars fans created a dangerous environment and disrupted the integrity of the match.”
The incident, which occurred at the end of the match, prompted a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday. The Ibadan club’s management expressed regret over the situation, with a club spokesperson saying, “We deeply apologize to Ikorodu City, the match officials, and our supporters. We take full responsibility for the incident and are committed to ensuring that this never happens again.”
As part of the sanctions, fans of Shooting Stars have been indefinitely banned from attending the club’s home games. The decision aims to maintain order and ensure the safety of all parties involved in future matches.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has also stated that “this disciplinary measure should serve as a deterrent to other clubs to uphold safety and proper conduct at all times.”
