Uganda’s military chief and first son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has caused a national outcry after confirming the detention of Edward Sebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard to prominent opposition leader Bobi Wine.
Sebuufu had been missing for five days after reportedly being abducted in Kiwango, a central Ugandan town, on Sunday. Kainerugaba’s posts on X, revealing Sebuufu was “in my basement,” accompanied by a photograph of the bodyguard with a clean-shaven head, have been widely condemned as an admission of unlawful detention.
The posts triggered widespread backlash, with the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe trending across Ugandan social media.
Critics have accused Kainerugaba of politicising his military position, with his public commentary fuelling speculation about potential succession plans in Uganda.
Human rights organisations and opposition figures are also calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Sebuufu, deeming his detention unlawful and part of a broader crackdown on dissent.
