Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura assumes duty as UBEC Chairman, pledges to reposition basic education.
The newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Senator Umaru Al-Makura, has vowed to reposition Nigeria’s basic education system for improved quality and access.
Al-Makura, a former Governor of Nasarawa State and seasoned education advocate, made the commitment during his assumption of duty at UBEC headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued by UBEC’s Public Relations Officer, David Apeh, Al-Makura expresses gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the four-year mandate and pledged to leverage his extensive background in teaching and governance to achieve significant reforms.
“I cherish this appointment because I am a trained teacher with Grade II, NCE, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Education is my passion, and I will use my experience to leave a lasting legacy at UBEC,” he stated.
Highlighting his past contributions, Al-Makura recalled supporting the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as Governor and serving on UBEC’s committee while in the Senate. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to ensure inclusive and quality basic education nationwide.
Al-Makura also praised UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba, for her strides since taking office in January, describing her as a dedicated reformer.
Garba, in turn, welcomed the Chairman’s leadership, noting their shared vision to strengthen UBEC.
“The President directed me to fix UBEC. With Senator Al-Makura as Chairman, we are determined to leave a legacy long after our tenure,” she affirmed.
The appointment of Al-Makura and Garba marks a renewed push for educational reforms under President Tinubu’s administration, with stakeholders expecting UBEC to prioritize infrastructure, teacher training, and technology integration in schools.
