TThe Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, says Africa must take its rightful place in the United Nations’ main decision-making body.
Speaking at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Abbas argued that the continent home to more than 1.4 billion people, should no longer be side-lined.
He stressed that Africa bears the greatest burden of global challenges such as conflicts, climate disasters, and inequality.
The conference, themed “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice, and Prosperity for All,” also heard Abbas reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral cooperation. He said the 10th House has strengthened global ties through parliamentary friendship groups and aligned global commitments with local priorities.
Abbas revealed that Nigeria’s review of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to boost exports by 10 percent by 2030. He also highlighted the push for the amended Climate Change Act (2021) and urged the release of the $100 billion global climate finance pledge.
On inclusion, the Speaker said the proposed Reserved Seats for Women Bill will help close Nigeria’s gender gap in parliamentary representation.
