President Tinubu moves to protect retirees, ordering free healthcare, pension increments, and reforms to secure dignity in retirement.
President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing it as a key pillar of social protection and dignity in retirement.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee to safeguard the most vulnerable pensioners.
The directive followed a briefing at the State House from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, who updated the President on a series of reform measures aimed at improving retiree welfare and broadening the reach of the pension system.
President Tinubu further instructed the urgent resolution of the lingering police pension issue, emphasizing that those who protect the nation must retire with dignity and peace of mind.
According to the statement, the PenCom DG briefed the President on efforts to preserve the value of pension fund assets amid inflationary pressures, as well as plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
The President expressed strong support for the reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and protection for ordinary Nigerians.
