Nnewi, Anambra State — The 2025 Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL) kicked off in grand style in Nnewi, thrilling fans with competitive action and celebrating one of the sport’s foremost champions, Professor Victor Madubuko, Chairman of the Anambra State Beach Soccer Association.
On the pitch, Jigawa Golden Stars BSC stunned Kebbi United BSC with a 3–0 win, while Ibom BSC maintained their momentum, defeating Nmanko Patigi BSC by the same scoreline. Kada BSC also recorded a 3–0 victory over Niger BSC.
In the day’s most dramatic fixture, hosts Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors were edged out 6–5 on penalties by Kebbi Fishers BSC after regulation time ended in a draw.

Off the sand, the spotlight turned to Professor Madubuko, who received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Nigeria Beach Soccer League at the close of Matchday One. The honour recognized his visionary leadership and tireless efforts in making Anambra a beach soccer stronghold.
Presenting the award, NBSL Chief Executive Officer Mahmud Hadejia praised Madubuko’s “passion, dedication, and grassroots drive,” calling him the driving force behind the sport’s growth in the state.
Madubuko has championed an ambitious project to build a permanent beach soccer arena in Anambra, featuring an international-standard artificial sand pitch. The facility is expected to host major competitions, nurture grassroots talent, and provide opportunities for youth empowerment through sports.
Accepting the award, Madubuko dedicated it to players, coaches, and fans. “This recognition is not just for me, but for every believer in beach soccer in Anambra. Our mission is to make the game a frontline sporting activity in this state, and this honour gives us even greater motivation to keep building,” he said.
