The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has been relocated from Benin City to the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja, effective Monday, January 27, 2025.
This announcement, made in a notice dated January 24, 2025, and signed by Tribunal Secretary Mu’azu Ibrahim Bagudu, informed all parties of the change. Although no specific reason was cited, the relocation is perceived as a strategic move to enhance security and impartiality in handling the election petition.
Former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. John Mayaki, commended the decision, calling it a necessary step to uphold the integrity of the process.
“This relocation ensures the safety of Tribunal members, litigants, and electoral materials while protecting the process from undue influence or distractions,” Mayaki stated. He pointed out that similar measures have been implemented in states like Rivers, Osun, and Kogi to maintain judicial fairness in election cases.
With proceedings set to resume on Monday at its new Abuja location, this decision underscores the judiciary’s commitment to a secure and credible election petition process.
