In a bid to improve cancer awareness and early detection, 20,000 underprivileged individuals across Kwara State’s three senatorial districts are set to receive free cervical and prostate cancer screenings.
The initiative, led by the LEAH Foundation, was unveiled by Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, wife of Kwara’s former governor, at the Prostate Cancer Initiative launch in Ilorin to mark World Cancer Day 2025.
Mrs. Ahmed highlighted the urgent need for grassroots outreach, noting that limited awareness contributes significantly to the spread of cancer in rural areas. She reassured participants that early detection makes treatment more affordable and effective, urging those diagnosed to remain hopeful, as cancer is not an automatic death sentence.
Regular health check-ups

Addressing participants, Professor Popoola Ademola, a urologist from the University of Ilorin, stressed the importance of regular health check-ups and urged individuals to be proactive in monitoring their well-being.
He also called on the government to prioritize investments in cancer treatment facilities, ensuring better healthcare access for citizens.
Similarly, Dr. Oyinloye Gregory, Medical Director of LEAH Medical Centre, advised attendees to follow expert recommendations beyond screening, emphasizing that prevention and education are crucial in the fight against cancer.
