Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians that the 2025 budget will be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu without delay.
Speaking during plenary, Senator Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to ensuring a smooth budgetary process. He commended lawmakers for their diligence in scrutinizing the budget, stating that their efforts would result in a practical and effective financial plan for the country.
He also lauded the Senate’s decision to extend the capital provisions of the 2024 budget until June 2025 to prevent disruptions in government operations.
Meanwhile, the Senate announced a reshuffling of key standing committees. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC-Abia) was named Chairman of the South East Development Commission Committee, while Senator Babangida Hussaini (APC-Jigawa) will lead the North West Development Commission Committee.
Their vice chairmen are Senator Mohammed Dandutse (APC-Katsina) and Senator Ken Eze (APC-Ebonyi), respectively.
Senator Titus Zam (APC-Benue) was appointed Chairman of the North Central Development Commission Committee. Other key appointments include Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi) as Chairman of the Sports Development Committee, and Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) as Chairman of the National Population and Identity Committee.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi) will now head the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), while Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (APC-Delta) takes over the Local Content Committee.
Senator Akpabio also announced the appointment of Senator Isa Jubril (APC-Kogi) as Deputy Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee, with a new chairman for the committee to be named later.
The announcements were made as the Senate resumed plenary, reinforcing its commitment to efficient governance and legislative oversight.
