A Magistrates’ Court in Jos has handed an 18-month prison sentence to a 36-year-old security guard, Justice Terfa, for defrauding a woman of her poultry investment.
Presiding over the case on Wednesday, Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos convicted Terfa after he admitted guilt. The court ruled that he could either pay a ₦30,000 fine to reduce his jail term to six months or compensate the victim with ₦500,000. If he fails to pay the compensation, he will serve an additional one-year sentence.
Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, the prosecutor, stated that the complaint was lodged on December 21, 2024, at Anglo-Jos Police Station by Anthonia Osirho, the affected party.
According to the prosecution, Osirho entrusted Terfa with 30 day-old chicks and provided ₦300,000 for their feeding and care. However, instead of raising them as agreed, Terfa sold 29 birds and kept the proceeds for himself.
The prosecution emphasized that his actions violated the Plateau Penal Code Law.
