In Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed newly elected local government chairmen and councillors not to resume office yet, citing concerns over potential clashes.
Speaking in Osogbo at the swearing-in ceremony for the officials, Governor Adeleke said the decision was to prevent conflict with individuals who, according to him, were aided by the police to forcefully occupy local government secretariats.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and assured that the judiciary would handle the situation. He urged the newly elected officials to focus on community development and delivering the dividends of democracy, in line with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) manifesto.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who attended the event alongside other dignitaries, advised the new officials to fulfill their campaign promises and work for the people at the grassroots. He also cautioned against political violence, emphasizing that democracy should be upheld through legal means rather than force.
The local government elections, which took place on February 22, have been surrounded by legal disputes, with an Osun State High Court affirming vacancies in the affected positions before the election.
Governor Adeleke assured the public that due process would be followed to resolve the situation peacefully.
