The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, has imposed a ban on the use of firecrackers, commonly referred to as knockouts, as part of efforts to ensure public safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, conveys the directive from the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu. According to Disu, the ban is aimed at safeguarding lives and property while maintaining peace during the festive season.
“This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season,” Disu stated. He emphasized that the use of firecrackers often causes unnecessary panic, poses fire hazards, and could lead to avoidable incidents.
The Commissioner warned that anyone caught using or selling firecrackers would face arrest and prosecution under the law.
The police called on community leaders and residents to support awareness campaigns highlighting the risks associated with firecrackers. They also urged residents to comply with the directive and remain vigilant during the festive period.
“Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or violations of the ban through our emergency hotlines,” the statement read.
The FCT Police assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents throughout the holiday season.
