In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rally organized by the M23 rebel group in Bukavu was marred by deadly explosions and gunfire, resulting in at least 11 deaths and numerous injuries.
The incident occurred during a public gathering at Independence Square, where thousands had assembled to hear rebel leaders speak. Videos from the scene depict chaotic moments as attendees fled amidst the blasts, with bodies visible on the streets.
The M23 rebels, who recently seized Bukavu from government forces, have accused the Congolese government of orchestrating the attack. Rebel leader Corneille Nangaa stated that grenades used were similar to those employed by the Burundian National Defence Force, allied with the Congolese army.
He also mentioned the apprehension of two individuals alleged to be “terrorists from Kinshasa” at the scene.
Conversely, President Felix Tshisekedi condemned the explosions, describing them as “a heinous terrorist act perpetrated by a foreign army illegally present on Congolese soil,” implicitly referencing Rwanda.
The incident has intensified tensions in the region, which has been plagued by ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises.
The United Nations has highlighted the urgent need for $2.54 billion to provide humanitarian aid to millions affected by the ongoing conflicts in Congo. The situation remains volatile, with continued fighting leading to significant displacement and loss of life.
