The Vatican has announced that the funeral of Pope Francis will hold this Saturday at ten o’clock in the morning, in St Peter’s Square.
The eighty-eight-year-old Argentine pontiff passed away on Monday, barely a month after being discharged from hospital, where he spent five weeks battling double pneumonia.
World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, are expected to attend the ceremony in honour of the late Catholic leader.
After the service, the Pope’s coffin — made of wood and zinc, according to his wishes — will be moved into St Peter’s Basilica, before being taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial.
The funeral date was officially set during the first general congregation of cardinals on Tuesday, marking the start of the process to elect a new pope within the next three weeks.
