
“The Vatican was steeped in solemnity on Wednesday as the open coffin of Pope Francis began its final procession to St Peter’s Basilica,
Accompanied by a sea of mourners and the rhythmic toll of the basilica bells.
The coffin, borne on the shoulders of pallbearers, left the Casa Santa Marta where the late pontiff lived and passed away, amid a deeply reverent atmosphere.
Pope Francis, aged 88, died on Monday following a stroke, coma, and heart failure.Eight Swiss Guards in full ceremonial attire flanked the coffin with staffs in hand, as it was carried slowly across St Peter’s Square.
Tens of thousands stood in hushed silence, many with tears in their eyes.Priests dressed in choir robes, others in cassocks, and groups of nuns with candles formed a long, solemn procession behind the coffin.
“The Holy Father walked humbly in life, and today, even in death, he brings us together in prayer and peace,” said Cardinal Giovanni Battista, one of the senior figures leading the procession.
The Vatican has announced that the funeral will take place on Saturday, with a global outpouring of dignitaries and worshippers expected to attend.
“He was a shepherd to the world,” a mourner from Argentina told Vatican Radio. “Now we walk him home.
