President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded a diplomatic tour to France and South Africa, where he advanced Nigeria’s global ambitions and strengthened bilateral ties.
The visits underscored Nigeria’s commitment to fostering economic partnerships, promoting regional stability, and elevating its status in global governance.
Strategic Engagements in France
At the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, President Tinubu, engaged with key stakeholders in France, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to collaboration in critical sectors such as food security, energy, solid minerals, education, and defense. These discussions reinforced Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with one of Europe’s leading economies and highlighted opportunities for mutual growth.
Pushing for Nigeria’s Global Leadership in South Africa
In South Africa, President Tinubu attended the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC), using the platform to advocate for Nigeria’s inclusion in global decision-making bodies. He made a compelling case for Nigeria’s full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), signaling the nation’s readiness to play a more prominent role in international governance.
President Tinubu also sought South Africa’s support for Nigeria’s leadership in key discussions during South Africa’s G20 presidency, calling for closer cooperation between the two African powerhouses.

Several landmark agreements were reached during the BNC:
- Simplified Visa Processes: In a significant boost for tourism and trade, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a simplified visa application process for Nigerian tourists, eliminating the need for passport submission.
- Early Warning Mechanism: Both nations committed to finalizing a long-delayed Memorandum of Understanding on the Early Warning Mechanism, aimed at preventing violence and addressing criminal acts involving their nationals.
- Economic Cooperation: The launch of the Joint Ministerial Advisory Council on Industry, Trade, and Investment was announced to strengthen economic collaboration between Africa’s largest economies.
