
Heavy rains and thunderstorms expected in parts of Nigeria this week as NiMet issues flood warning.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms, heavy rains, and the likelihood of flash floods across several states from Monday through Wednesday.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted morning thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina states on Monday, with moderate rainfall expected across the entire northern region by afternoon and evening.
“There is a high possibility of flooding in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi states during the forecast period,” the agency stated.
For the central region, light rainfall is anticipated in parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa in the morning, while areas including Kwara, Plateau, and additional parts of Nasarawa and Benue may experience light rains later in the day.
NiMet also predicted cloudy conditions in the southern region with light rains over Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states during the morning hours. Additional rains are expected later in the day, with the possibility of flooding in Oyo, Ogun, Edo, and Delta states.
On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are expected in the northern states of Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara, followed by moderate rainfall later in the day. Intermittent light rains are anticipated in the central region, while the south will experience cloudy skies with light rainfall across multiple states. Flood alerts remain in effect for Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
For Wednesday, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are forecast over Taraba and Kaduna in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms across Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Adamawa later in the day. Light rain is expected in the central and southern regions, with Bayelsa flagged for possible flooding.
NiMet urged the public to exercise caution during heavy rainfall, avoid driving through flood-prone areas, and activate emergency response systems where necessary.
