ADC Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, has rejected the proposed salary hike for political office holders, urging government to focus on workers’ welfare instead.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the proposed salary increase for political office holders, calling it insensitive to the plight of Nigerians grappling with economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to suspend the plan immediately.
“Raising salaries for top officials at a time when millions of Nigerians are battling inflation, high fuel costs, and inadequate wages is unjustifiable,” Abdullahi said.

The RMAFC had proposed salary reviews for the President, Vice President, governors, and other senior political office holders, sparking widespread debate.
Abdullahi dismissed the move, noting that political leaders already benefit from substantial allowances and discretionary funds far exceeding the current minimum wage of N70,000.
“Any attempt to defend this proposal is insensitive. What Nigerians need is not fatter paychecks for politicians but a living wage, timely salaries for civil servants, and strengthened social welfare programmes for the vulnerable,” he added.
The ADC maintained that government priority should focus on economic relief measures and wage reforms for workers, rather than increasing the earnings of political elites.
