Bandit attack on Lakurawa village in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State has left two police officers dead.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 4, 2025, highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region despite government efforts to curb rising violence.
According to local sources, the attack began when heavily armed bandits stormed the village, targeting residents and law enforcement officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two police officers on duty lost their lives while attempting to repel the attackers.
Speaking about the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the deaths and expressed the force’s determination to bring the perpetrators to justice. “We deeply mourn the loss of our gallant officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Investigations are already underway, and efforts to apprehend the assailants are in full force,” he said.
Fear and Displacement
Residents of Lakurawa village have reportedly fled their homes in fear of further attacks. A community leader, who requested anonymity, described the situation as dire. “Our people are terrified. We are pleading with the government to deploy more security personnel to protect us from these relentless attacks,” he said.
The attack also saw the bandits loot valuables, including food supplies and livestock, leaving the community in distress.
Government Response
The Kebbi State Government has condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity in the state. In a statement, Governor Nasir Idris called for calm and assured residents that additional security measures are being implemented to restore peace. “We are working closely with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and to prevent a recurrence of such tragic incidents,” the statement read.
