The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended popular actress Samha Inuwa for one year, citing her controversial dress and provocative videos as the primary reasons for the decision.
The suspension, announced on January 4, 2025, follows public outcry over content deemed inappropriate by the state’s cultural standards.
According to a statement by Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s Information Officer, Samha had previously received multiple warnings regarding her “inappropriate dressing, vulgar displays, and language in some of her videos. “The decision to suspend the actress comes after careful consideration of her actions, which do not align with the moral and cultural expectations of the people of Kano State,” the board’s director stated.
Alongside the suspension, the board revoked Samha’s licence and announced it would no longer censor any films featuring her.
The suspension has sparked debate across the state, with some condemning the decision as an infringement on freedom of expression, while others support it as a necessary measure to preserve local cultural values.
In response to the suspension, Samha Inuwa expressed regret for any offense caused and vowed to comply with the regulations during the period of her suspension. “I never intended to disrespect the cultural norms of Kano State. I will take this time to reflect on my actions and ensure that my future conduct aligns with the values of the society,” Inuwa stated.
The board stated that this decision aligns with its commitment to maintaining moral standards in the Kannywood film industry and enforcing its regulations.
