John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president during a ceremony held at Independence Square in Accra, attended by global dignitaries, including Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Mahama succeeds Nana Akufo-Addo, who assumed office in 2017 after defeating Mahama..
In a historic moment, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also inaugurated as Ghana’s first female vice president. The oaths of office for both leaders were administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Mahama, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured victory in the December elections with 50% of the vote, defeating the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate and former vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia. Mahama garnered 6.3 million votes, winning by a margin of 1.7 million.
Bawumia conceded defeat promptly after the results were announced, setting the tone for a peaceful transition.
Following Mahama’s election, Nigeria’s President Tinubu congratulated him in a phone call, expressing optimism that Mahama’s leadership would contribute to stability and progress within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Mahama now faces the daunting task of revitalizing Ghana’s economy and delivering on his promises to the electorate.
