The Federal Government has introduced a Reverse Vending Machine to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management across Nigeria.
The initiative was launched at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, by the Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal.
Speaking at the event, Mallam Lawal stated that the technology allows individuals to deposit plastic bottles and other recyclable materials in exchange for rewards. He explained that the initiative aims to foster proper waste disposal, cultivate a recycling culture, and encourage Nigerians to actively participate in environmental protection efforts.
The minister highlighted that the Reverse Vending Machine aligns with the principles of a circular economy by ensuring plastics are recycled and re-enter the production cycle instead of polluting oceans or ending up in landfills. This approach, he said, reduces the demand for new resources, minimizes ecological footprints, and creates economic opportunities by boosting local industries and generating jobs.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, described plastic pollution as a global crisis with devastating consequences on the environment, human health, and the economy. He emphasized the urgency of implementing innovative strategies to promote sustainable waste management practices in the country.
Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Mr. Julius Pondi, commended the federal government for the initiative and assured that the National Assembly remains committed to supporting programs that drive good governance, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic development.
